Middle School is Not a Building |
|
To improve middle grades education in Vermont, educators must work in an integrated, coherent, and comprehensive manner. In Middle School is Not a Building , the Vermont Middle Grades Task Force proposes ten recommendations for improving the education of Vermont’s 10 to 15 year olds. These goals, drawn from seminal research-based documents, point to curriculum, instruction, and assessment; school organization and community; and teacher education and development as the means to foster the healthy intellectual and socio-emotional development of Vermont’s young adolescents. Such development is essential to these learners’ efficacy, self-concept, and success and is also essential to a healthy and vibrant state economy and citizenry. The pages that follow provide the task force’s ten recommended goals with proposed actions for state, professional organization, post secondary, district, school, classroom, and learner level considerations. We would like to introduce ourselves and our work to you. We are part of a unique collaboration of colleges providing ongoing professional development for aspiring and practicing teachers of 10-15 year olds. Since 1991, the Middle Grades Collaborative has offered the Institute, aimed at providing this support and, in addition, helping educators earn their Middle Grades Teaching Endorsement. Although the Collaborative is based in Vermont, both Vermonters and teachers well beyond our state’s borders have found the institute to be a meaningful and important professional development experience. We believe all educators who teach in grades 5 through 9 should understand the unique nature and needs of young adolescents and know how to plan learning opportunities and schooling structures that are responsive to those needs. Our students must accomplish a tremendous amount of personal development and intellectual growth during these years. They require knowledgeable and reflective practitioners in every school who know how to combine strong, developmental practice with the high expectations and standards students must meet. In this era of high stakes school accountability, we must foster high achievement and personal efficacy for all students and do so in a caring and responsive manner.
One of the many strengths of this Institute week is that our own collaboration extends far beyond the college and university walls. As you can see on the faculty list, professors and classroom educators work together to develop each year's institute. We have the continuous support of the Vermont State Department of Education and the Vermont Association for Middle Level Education. Together, we continually update course strands, content, and delivery to weave together research-based developmental practices with the realities of our classrooms, schools, districts, state and national trends.
We are proud to be offering our sixteenth summer institute, and to know there are so many dedicated teachers working with young adolescents. We know that as both instructors and learners the week ahead in late June will be a good one for all of us. We look forward to getting to know you and, for the many of you returning to the Institute, to working with you again. |
